Festivals and annual events in the Dhauladhar, month by month

Losar, Tibetan opera in spring, the Dalai Lama's birthday on 6 July, Bir's flying season and DIFF in autumn. The Dhauladhar year, with fixed dates and moving programmes kept distinct.
You are trying to time a trip around something, or you are already here and want to know what the year looks like. This is the calendar for the Dhauladhar towns, with the fixed dates stated as dates and the moving ones as windows.
In short, the Dalai Lama's birthday is 6 July each year on the Gregorian calendar, and the Nobel Peace Prize anniversary is 10 December. Neither date tells you the local programme, so confirm that before you plan around it. Losar, Tibetan New Year, follows a lunar calendar and moves each year. Bir's flying season and DIFF are other reasons to plan a trip. Check this year's dates and arrangements before you book.

January
The quiet month. Snow on the ridge above McLeodganj and Dharamkot, ice on the last stretch of road, and most of Bir's cafés on short hours. It is the month the towns belong to the people who live in them, which is either the reason to come or the reason not to. For what is on, check the feeds: McLeodganj, Dharamkot, Bir.
February: Losar
Losar, Tibetan New Year, falls on 7 February in 2027 and is the biggest date in McLeodganj's year. The days before are for cleaning and cooking. The first three days of the new year are the celebration, with the main temple, the Tsuglagkhang, at the centre of it, prayer flags renewed on every roof, and the town in its best clothes. Bir's Tibetan colony marks it too, more quietly.
A visitor is welcome to watch and, at many things, to join. The etiquette is the obvious kind: ask before photographing people at prayer, dress warmly and decently at the temple, and do not treat the morning offerings as a breakfast buffet. Long-life prayer ceremonies for the Dalai Lama are often scheduled in the weeks around Losar; they are public and listed on the official schedule.
March and April: Shoton, and the flying returns
Shoton, the Tibetan opera festival at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts above McLeodganj, runs for about ten days in March or April, with opera troupes from across India and Nepal performing Ache Lhamo in costumes made in the institute's own workshop. The dates are set a few weeks ahead each year. When they are, the listing appears on the McLeodganj feed.
In Bir the paragliding season opens as the winds settle, usually in March. The town fills, the cafés reopen their full hours, and the evening programme starts again. Holi falls in March, and the towns mark it.
May and June: peak season
The busiest months for all four towns, and the ones with the most on. When the Dalai Lama gives public teachings in McLeodganj the town fills days ahead (dates on dalailama.com; foreigners register in person a few days ahead with passport and visa copies). The flying is at its best, and the workshop calendar in Dharamkot is full. Book stays early, because the towns run out of rooms on May weekends.
July: the Dalai Lama's birthday
6 July belongs in the calendar even if you would usually avoid a monsoon trip. It marks the Dalai Lama's birthday on the Gregorian calendar. If you are considering McLeodganj or Dharamshala, check the official schedule and local organisers' announcements before choosing a celebration to attend. The date alone does not tell you the venue, whether the public can get in, or whether he will be there.
The 2026 birthday has already passed. His office records his 91st birthday celebration on 6 July 2026 at Shewatsel in Leh, Ladakh, not Dharamshala. The next annual date is 6 July 2027, and we have no confirmed local programme for 2027.
July and August: planning around the monsoon
Flying stops and the towns thin out. The rain is serious, and the roads close now and then. It is also when the locals put on things for themselves. Dharamshala's Monsoon Festival ran at the end of August in 2026, and Bir marked Independence Day with a music night. If you are here for the green and the quiet, this is your season. Check the feeds the day before, because monsoon plans move.
September: the season restarts
The month things come back. In 2026 Dharamkot had a festival weekend in the middle of the month and an autumn festival after it, Bir had a bass night at Flying Folks, and the flying restarted as the skies cleared. Overnight buses fill again from the second week.
October: the big month
Cicada Festival in Palampur opened October in 2026 (2–4 October). Ektara Folk & Mystic Music Festival in Bir ran 18–20 October. DIFF, the Dharamshala International Film Festival, closed the month, 29 October to 1 November 2026, at the Tibetan Children's Village (TCV) by Dal Lake, near McLeodganj. Passes were sold in advance and the popular screenings were full.
October is also the paragliding competition window in Bir when a championship is held. The cross-country World Cup has run there in late October and early November in past years. Whether it runs in a given year is decided late, so check the Bir feed rather than assuming.
November: clear skies
The best flying weather of the year and the clearest views of the range. Fewer big festivals, more of the everyday programme: socials, screenings, dinners. Diwali falls in October or November and the towns light up for it.
December: the Himalayan Festival
The International Himalayan Festival runs in McLeodganj on and around 10 December, the anniversary of the Dalai Lama's Nobel Peace Prize, with cultural performances from across the Himalaya over two or three days. Then the towns turn to Christmas and New Year, and Bir and Dharamkot celebrate both.
How to actually go
Tibetan festivals at the temple and TIPA are public. Arrive early, dress for the cold, and follow the crowd on what is and is not photographed.
The Dalai Lama's teachings need registration, done in person at the temple courtyard on the days before, with copies of your passport and visa if you are from abroad. Bring a cushion and an FM radio for the translation channel. The shops nearby sell both.
DIFF sells festival passes online in advance; the town's rooms go with them. Its venue, TCV by Dal Lake, is about 10 km and 30 minutes from Dharamshala's bus stand, and 22 km, about 50 minutes, from Gaggal airport.
Bir's flying season needs no ticket, only a tandem booking if you want to go up. The events around it are on the Bir feed.
